Code of Conduct

Last updated October 9, 2026

McGillXR exists so that anyone can come and learn extended reality, whatever their background or experience. That only works if everyone feels safe and welcome. This code applies to everyone at our events and in our spaces: participants, mentors, judges, speakers, sponsors, volunteers and the executive team.

Where it applies

At every McGillXR event — hackathons, workshops, screenings, socials and outings — in person or online, and in our group chats, social media and project channels.

What we expect

  • Be respectful. Treat everyone with courtesy, whatever their gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, age, religion, language, field of study or level of experience.
  • Be welcoming to beginners. Most of our participants are new to XR. Questions are how people learn; answer them kindly.
  • Collaborate in good faith. Credit your teammates and the work you build on, and respect other people’s ideas and code.
  • Ask before you record. Ask before photographing or filming someone up close, and respect a request not to be photographed.
  • Use the equipment safely. Follow the team’s instructions for headsets, clear your play space, and stop if someone is in the way.

What is not acceptable

  • Harassment, intimidation, threats or discrimination of any kind
  • Offensive comments, slurs or jokes about anyone’s identity
  • Unwanted physical contact or sexual attention, and sexual language or imagery
  • Stalking, following, or deliberately disrupting talks, workshops or judging
  • Photographing or recording someone who has asked you not to
  • Plagiarism or submitting work you did not make during the event, where the rules require new work
  • Encouraging any of the above

Reporting a problem

If something happens to you or to someone else, or you are worried about something, tell any member of the executive team at the event, or email mcgillxr@gmail.com. If your concern involves a member of the executive team, say so and it will be handled by other executives.

Reports are kept confidential and shared only with the executives who need to act on them. You do not need proof to make a report, and no one will face retaliation for reporting in good faith.

If anyone is in immediate danger, call 911 first.

What happens next

The executive team will listen, look into what happened, and decide on a response. That can range from a warning to being asked to leave an event, being disqualified from a competition, or being barred from future McGillXR events.

Changes

If this code changes we will update the date at the top of this page.
